Accreditation & Legal Status
Virginia Bible University (VBU) operates as a Private School Exempt from Certification in the state of Virginia. Pursuant to § 23.1-226(C) of the Code of Virginia, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) grants religious exemptions to schools whose primary purpose is providing theological education. You can verify our exempt status on the SCHEV official directory. While VBU is legally authorized to grant religious degrees in Virginia, we are an institution non-accredited by federal accreditation agencies, such as the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). Unlike most countries, the United States does not have a national procedure for licensing or accrediting universities. Accreditation is a voluntary process and is not a function of the U.S. Department of Education. While accreditation qualifies institutions and enrolled students for access to federal financial aid, it is not necessary for most religious-exempt degrees or ministry positions. We are deeply committed to providing rigorous and faithful theological education. As a former executive director of the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) noted, "There are hundreds of Bible Colleges and Seminaries in the United States and Canada that are offering good solid theological training, yet they are not accredited."
